Deep Purple & Alice Cooper
A stage on the lake in Montreux? The opportunity was just too good to miss. The Festival had to invite Deep Purple to make history by playing ‘Smoke on The Water’ on the waters of Lake Geneva. This being Deep Purple’s 10th concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival is the icing on the cake. On stage, the hard rock pioneers have always been an incredible factory of virtuosity and improvisation, stringing together lyrical and inventive solos, backed by the relentless rhythm of mainstays Ian Paice and Roger Glover. Their current tour features tracks from both albums (three since 2017!) and legendary hits such as ‘Black Night’ and ‘Hush’. At Montreux, there’s always that spine-tingling moment when Ian Gillan sings the chorus of ‘Smoke on the Water’. So imagine it resounding far and wide, over the waves of Lake Geneva to the streets of Montreux… We’re already shivering.
He’s the godfather of shock rock! The legendary stage antics, iconic make-up and pioneering approach to the horrific and provocative can only mean Alice Cooper. But Alice Cooper is also, and above all, a giant of recorded music, with some of the most memorable compositions in the rock pantheon. Live, Vincent Furnier and his talented sidekicks theatrically perform decades of archetypal tracks, from ‘School’s Out’ to ‘Poison’ and ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’. As prolific and inspired as ever, Alice recorded the album Road the old-fashioned way without overdubs. Released in 2023,the album earned acclaim from the specialist press. The Detroit rocker has performed three times in Montreux. His first concert was immortalised on tape and according to him, is “the most faithful record of an Alice Cooper concert.” Preceding Deep Purple on the Lake Stage, and five years since making his mark with the Hollywood Vampires, the beast of the stage is back for a flamboyant evening of hard rock.
